As to the Theory of the Novel,
the very First & the very Last

          Let us assume that The Satyricon is a novel, though there are voices, not many, which deny the fact.
          Let us assume that Joyce knew The Satyricon extremely well in detail, on account of his Latin in a Catholic University. That is why he studied Italian. In this way, he practically covered all Romance languages, and his stay repeatedly sojourned in Zürich took care of his German. Joyce could write fluently in Italian (even published newspaper articles for money), French (he lived in Paris practically half of his life), and Danish and Norwegian because he corresponded with Henrik Ibsen in both these languages.
            As part of the series Joyce Lexicography, we are publishing now The Satyricon, by Petronius, in Latin, English, Romanian and French. The readers who will go from this text, written in the first century, to James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, finished in 1939, will certainly find for themselves the connection between the two.

Conform teoriei romanului,
primul și ultimul

          Să considerăm că Satyricon este roman, deși există voci care afirmă contrariul, chiar dacă ele nu sunt multe la număr.
           Să considerăm că Joyce cunoștea Satyricon profund și în detaliu, dat fiind că a studiat latina la o universitate catolică. Acesta a fost motivul pentru care a studiat italiana. În maniera lui proprie, Joyce a acoperit întreaga arie a limbilor romanice, iar șederea lui la Zürich, prelungită în mod repetat, i–a asigurat cunoștințele de limba germană. Joyce scria foarte bine în italiană (chiar a publicat articole de ziar în această limbă, toate scrise pentru bani), în franceză (a locuit la Paris jumătate din viața lui), și de asemenea în daneză și norvegiană—acestea din urmă fiind limbile în care Joyce a corespondat cu Henrik Ibsen.
           Publicăm acum, în seria Joyce Lexicography, Satyricon, de Petronius, sub formă de texte paralele, în limbile latină, engleză, română și franceză. Cititorii care, după acest text scris în secolul I, vor citi Finnegans Wake, terminat de James Joyce în anul 1939, vor găsi fără nicio îndoială legătura dintre cele două cărți.
