Contemporary Literature Press wishes to point out by this publication that Finnegans Wake is, in more ways than one, the last great book that civilization has produced and published just before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.

Having foreseen that in the after-war years the Image would gradually replace the Word, James Joyce focuses both on the Word as word in language studies, and on the Word as word in pure literature.

In the series Joyce Lexicography, having dealt with Romania and Germany and Scandinavia from the strictly linguistic point of view, it is now high time to turn to the literature side, and embark upon what we should call Literary Lexicography.

When Joyce deals with Allusion, the whole of European literature is mentioned there: not only do we meet Shakespeare in plenty, but we also meet Cervantes and Rabelais, and we also meet Lewis Carroll, and especially, and above all, the great Dante and his Divine Comedy — the book that was not only constant reading material for James Joyce, but also for his two best friends, Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot.

This book is meant to provide circumstantial evidence that with James Joyce the essence and substance of Weltliteratur is as important as all the words of all the European languages taken together, including the Bible and Dickens. All the names and motifs that you are sure to find in Joyce are properly mentioned in this book.

Contemporary Literature Press afirmă prin publicarea acestui volum că, în mai multe privințe, Finnegans Wake este cea din urmă mare carte pe care civilizația europeană a produs-o și a publicat-o chiar în 1939, cu șase luni înainte de izbucnirea celui de-al doilea Război Mondial.

Anticipând că în perioada postbelică Imaginea va înlocui puțin câte puțin Cuvântul, James Joyce își concentrează întreaga atenție atât asupra Cuvântului ca obiect al studiului limbilor în sine, cât și asupra cuvintelor așa cum există ele în literatura propriu-zisă.

După ce seria Joyce Lexicography s-a ocupat de România, Germania și Scandinavia din punct de vedere strict lingvistic, a venit momentul să se îndrepte și către literatură și să deschidă acest drum spre ceea ce am putea numi Lexicografie Literară.

În Aluzie, Joyce include de fapt toată literatura europeană: mult, foarte mult Shakespeare, apoi Cervantes, Rabelais, Lewis Carroll, dar mai ales Dante cu Divina lui Comedie — cartea de căpătâi a lui Joyce, ca și a celor doi mari susținători ai lui întru literatură, Ezra Pound și T.S. Eliot.

Volumul pe care îl publicăm acum este o dovadă indirectă că pentru Joyce ideea de Weltliteratur are aceeași importanță ca și cuvintele limbilor europene, incluzând aici și Biblia și pe Dickens. Toate numele și toate acele motifs folosite de Joyce se regăsesc în listele din acest volum.

Vă dorim Lectură plăcută! pentru tot ce a scris Joyce și pentru tot ce au scris ceilalți de care vorbește Joyce. Scrierile lui sunt o invitație la lectura întregii literaturi. Finnegans Wake este modul lui James Joyce de a afirma că Limba și Literatura formează un tot de nedespărțit.
