À la recherche de Ulysses: C. George Sandulescu.

George Sandulescu has mapped his own land in literary criticism and linguistics at once. One name for this land of letters and philosophy could be ‘The Mind in Progress’. Probing the WORD with a depth and sharpness of focus few can emulate, he reconstructs the mind of the master novelist of all times. Every sign on the page makes sense to the critic. The principle of his analysis is summed up by Gustave Flaubert’s statement, which he often quotes: “Anything becomes interesting if you look at it long enough.”

Following the critic’s own method, this volume is a longer look than usual. It focuses on the critic himself, this time. It has been the Editor’s aim, as remembrance of things past, and hope for the future, to follow George Sandulescu’s beau voyage before and after 1969 (the year he left his native Romania). Like Ulysses, he has returned, as Executive Advisor of the Contemporary Literature Press (under the Bucharest University, the Romanian Cultural Institute and the British Council). Members and students of the English Department wish him Welcome back and Heureux anniversaire 11 February 2011.

Heureux qui, comme Ulysse... opens with a recent interview with George Sandulescu, I Never Left Rumania! Rumania had left me! The interview is followed by images of the critic as colleagues, friends and former students see him: Nadia Lacoste (founder and Director of the Palace Press Office in Monaco for fifty years, and Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur), Geta Dumitriu, Florica Băncilă, Domnica Şerban, Irina Panovf, Ioana Ieronim, Monica Bottez, Mircea Mavriki. Present students of the English Department, who know the critic from his books, are also included with brief reading remarks. The selection from interviews granted by the critic to the British Association of Monaco, Riviera Radio and Tatsuo Hamada shed further light on his life and work. The last part includes chapters from George Sandulescu’s online books. The volume begins with the Editor’s Introduction, “Heureux qui, comme Ulysse, a fait un beau voyage...”. It ends with a review of Ulysses in the interpretation of C. George Sandulescu, entitled The Secret in the Text.

Heureux qui, comme Ulysse... is a book meant to welcome back Professor Sandulescu to a Department where he will always belong.
