Within the Theory of Translation, there are two fundamental principles, each of them equally true (in spite of the fact that his phenomenon generates):
          Principle A. A text CAN be translated.
          Principle B. A text CANNOT possibly be translated.
          The degree of truthfulness between the two depends, in part, on the typology of texts—a topic we are not going to discuss here.
          My personal opinion is that Finnegans Wake is the epitome of untranslatability. Scientific texts, and political texts are, by definition, the opposite. They are easily translatable—the reason simply lies in the one to one relationship between lexical items and lexical phrases, which are extremely standardized.
          I believe that, when James Joyce maintained that the book could be translated, he was making fun of a vast number of americans, in much the same way in which he was telling the story of Ulysses to Stuart Gilbert.
          It is up to you, 'Dear Reader', to delve into this paradox. Do delve deeply, and in writing!

        Există două principii fundamentale în Teoria Traducerii. Ambele sunt corecte, în ciuda paradoxului pe care îl implică alăturarea lor:
           Principiul A. Textul POATE fi tradus.
           Principiul B. Textul NU POATE fi tradus.
         Corectitudinea celor două principii depinde, parțial, de tipul textului—dar acest lucru nu face subiectul discuției prezente.
         Părerea mea personală este că Finnegans Wake este exemplul ideal de text intraductibil. La polul opus se plasează textele științifice și textele politice, care se traduc foarte ușor—explicația rezidă în faptul că acolo există o relație univocă, standardizată, între elementele lexicale și frazale.
         Sunt încredințat că, atunci când afirma că volumul acesta este traductibil, James Joyce își râdea de americani, tot așa cum glumea și atunci când îi explica lui Stuart Gilbert despre ce anume se povestește în Ulysses.
         „Dragă cititorule,” iată, așadar, un paradox ce se cere cercetat. Cercetează–l, prin urmare, cu răbdare, și așterne–ți concluziile pe hârtie!
