O carte neaoş românească ne soseşte din America Doris Plantus s-a născut la Detroit dintr-un tată bucovinean şi o mamă din Banat. În anul 2013, când autoarea împlineşte 56 de ani, Contemporary Literature Press îi publică, iată, în premieră, o carte scrisă într-o limbă română splendidă — cu care foarte puţini români, născuţi şi crescuţi în România, se pot cu adevărat mândri. În Statele Unite, Doris Plantus este profesoară universitară de literatură. Ea însăşi se descrie ca "traducătoare şi scriitoare bilingvă, publicată în măsură modestă." Îndreptăm această stare de lucruri, publicând în limbile română şi engleză, chiar în traducerea autoarei, o povestire despre Facerea Lumii, sau, mai bine zis, o sumă de povestiri despre facerea lumilor, legate la un loc într-un text care aduce cu "Luceafărul" şi cu "Meşterul Manole" în acelaşi timp. Sihastrul parcurge aventurile limbii române de la Biblie la The Big Bang. În egală măsură, el îmbină tonul grav al căderii şi înălţării cu zâmbetul zeflemitor al lui Anton Pann. În plus, Doris Plantus răstoarnă mitul lui Satan, care, în The Hermit, este Lucifer în persoană — mesagerul luminii, respectat de Divinitatea însăşi. Povestirile se întrepătrund, căderile anticipează ridicările repetate spre lumină, îngerul intră în trupul omenesc al eroilor, şi toate întâmplările curg cât se poate de spontan. Peştera Sihastrului este cosmosul, iar naraţiunea nu are nici început, nici sfârşit. Meditaţia cosmogonică nu este un subiect nou: ea revine tot mereu, de la Biblie la contemporanul nostru, Julian Barnes, în cartea lui intitulată Lumea în 10 capitole şi ½. Acest mic volum despre o obsesie fără limite a minţii omeneşti are meritul de a face din nesfârşire povestea spiritualităţii româneşti. Este o poveste scrisă într-o limbă română de mare forţă expresivă, într-un stil cum nu se poate mai elegant, şi cu reale valenţe filosofice. Written in Romanian. Bilingual Edition. Edited by Lidia Vianu. A Genuinely Romanian Book, Freshly Sent from America Doris Plantus was born and bred in Detroit. Her father came from Bucovina and her mother is from Banat. Doris will be 56 this year. While living in America, she has written and sent us a book in the Romanian language. Her style is superb and her words are very well chosen. She is a teacher of literature: to us, she introduced herself as 'a modestly published translator and bilingual writer of Romanian and English.' Her book which we are publishing now in a bilingual edition will certainly change that description to a great extent. The Hermit is a story about Genesis, or, rather, a sequence of stories about the repeated birth of the universe. Its roots go deep into poems Romanians everywhere know only too well, such as 'Luceafărul'—who is Lucifer, or the Morning Star, and 'Meşterul Manole' — a Master Builder of churches for our kings. The author intended it as a history of the Romanian language between the words of the Bible and The Big Bang. The Ascent and Fall are described in a style whose philosophical turn is tempered by the well-meant irony of a Balkanic Anton Pann — classical Romanian humanist, musician, lexicographer, and a teacher himself. In The Hermit, Doris Plantus gives us Satan as Lucifer, the messenger of light, and God's equal. She builds a number of stories that melt into each other. Repeated falls anticipate the rising into light again and again. The angel is slipping into human bodies. All the incidents imagined in the book flow naturally. The Hermit's cave is the universe: the narrative that is taking place inside it has no beginning and no end. Cosmogonic meditation is nothing new, from the Bible, where there is a lot of it in the Genesis, to our contemporary writer Julian Barnes, who takes it up in his novel A History of the World in 10½ Chapters. But this book about an overwhelming obsession of the human mind chooses the Romanian sense of 'veşnicie' — translated 'eternity' — as a central topic. Its remarkably forceful Romanian style is both elegant and breathtakingly abstract. By translating writers as far apart as the philosopher Lucian Blaga and the novelist Ionel Teodoreanu, Doris Plantus has practically covered the whole territory of Romanian prose. C.
