Press Release Bucharest, 1 August 2012 under The University of Bucharest, in conjunction with The British Council, and The Romanian Cultural Institute, A Mary Shelley Reader edited by Mihai A. Stroe (117 pp. ISBN 978-606-8366-29-6) This anthology of Mary Shelley's fiction takes the readers back to the origin of horror books and then horror films. Often labelled as the Gothic Novel, her best known novel, Frankenstein, was published in 1818. The Last Man, her second novel, describes suns intruding into the Solar System, tidal waves, and other fateful events around the year 2100. Mary Shelley's books have been reprinted in a huge number of copies. Frankenstein and The Last Man are now ranked among the first science-fiction novels. They are both visionary books. The reader will understand from this second anthology of fiction which we are publishing — after David Lodge — that the contemporary concern with an apocalyptic future is no news... In this respect, Hollywood films have certainly increased Mary Shelley's popularity. This Reader also offers an Introduction to Mary Shelley's art, and a Chronology of her life and work. From Frankenstein to Transylvania-born Dracula there is only one step. The two of them have often been associated one with the other. This anthology will, however, show that there is a more profound dimension to Mary Shelley's prose. Mihai Stroe's selection has put together the most intriguing excerpts of Mary Shelley's fiction, in hopes of gaining her a renewed audience among learners of the English language and literature. Stroe (117 pp. ISBN 978-606-8366-29-6) Contemporary Literature Press publică acum o antologie din proza lui Mary Shelley care duce cititorii către începuturile filmelor și cărților de groază. Frankenstein, primul ei roman, foarte adesea numit și Gotic, a apărut în anul 1818. Un al doilea roman al autoarei, The Last Man, a apărut în 1826: acesta descrie planete-soare care năvălesc în sistemul nostru solar, valuri uriașe și alte nenorociri ce se petrec în jurul anului 2100. Romanele lui Mary Shelley s-au tipărit în milioane de exemplare. Frankenstein și The Last Man sunt considerate printre primele romane science-fiction. Amândouă sunt cărți vizionare. Din acest al doilea Reader pe care îl publicăm — după antologia David Lodge — cititorul își va da cu siguranță seama că spaimele provocate de imaginea sumbră a unui viitor apocaliptic nu sunt monopolul secolului XXI... În acest sens, studiourile de film de la Hollywood au sporit imens popularitatea lui Mary Shelley. Antologia noastră o prezintă pe autoarea lui Frankenstein și din punctul de vedere al criticii literare: Mihai Stroe adaugă textelor alese de el o Introducere despre opera autoarei, precum și o Cronologie a vieții și scrierilor ei. Frankenstein și Dracula, domnitorul român pe numele lui adevărat Vlad Țepeș, sunt foarte des asociați. Antologia pe care o publicăm acum demonstrează însă că proza lui Mary Shelley este și o proză de idei, nu numai una de aprehensiune și groază. Mihai Stroe a ales fragmente care provoacă cititorul să se gândească la trecutul și prezentul literaturii. Acest Reader se adresează tuturor acelora care învață limba și literatura engleză, în speranța că vor redescoperi o autoare din secolul XIX, care scria romane despre secolul XXII. A Mary Shelley Reader, redactat de Mihai A.
