Dan Verona
Selected Poems. Poeme alese

Unlike most Romanian writers who were in their forties at the time of the fall of communism, Dan Verona stopped writing poetry in 1990. One has to read between the lines of that particular statement in order to understand that ultimately Dan Verona used words as political dissidence.

Born a few months before the Romanian king was ousted and the Romanian People’s Republic was installed, the poet lost his parents at an early age. He spent some time in an orphanage. Having studied Letters at the University of Bucharest until 1972, he was then hired by the Romanian Broadcasting Company. And today he is still there, working as a journalist.

His attitude when communism fell can be summed up in one detail of his biography: in 2003, he also obtained a degree from the Faculty of Theology.

The book of parallel poems we are publishing now has been translated by students of the M.A. Programme of the Contemporary Literary Text of the University of Bucharest. For years now, Dan Verona has generously hosted these students in his midnight broadcasts. Fourteen English poets have also actively assisted in the translation of these texts as part of the European Project poetry pRO.
